Loupe in Word
The add-in opens a pane beside your document. Press Check the document, or select a passage and check only that. Click a finding to go to the citation in the text.
- Adding it. Loupe is not in Microsoft's add-in store yet, so it is installed from a file; the steps for each kind of Word are below.
- Opening it. Loupe appears on the Home tab.
- Removing it. See the end of each set of steps below.
Install the Word add-in yourself
Download the add-in file loupe-word-add-in.xml
The file is a few lines telling Word where Loupe's pane lives; it is not a program. Then follow the steps for the Word you use.
Word in a browser
- Open a document in Word at office.com.
- Choose Home, then Add-ins, then More Settings.
- In the Office Add-ins window, choose Upload My Add-in, then Browse, pick the file you downloaded, and choose Upload.
- Loupe appears on the Home tab.
Word keeps an add-in added this way in that browser only. In another browser, or after clearing the browser's data, upload the file again. To remove it, clear the browser's data for office.com.
Word on a Mac
- In Finder, press Cmd+Shift+G and go to
~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Documents/wef. If the folderwefis not there, create it. - Copy the file you downloaded into that folder.
- Open Word, or quit and reopen it, and open a document.
- Choose Home, then Add-ins, and pick Loupe.
To remove it, delete the file from that folder and reopen Word.
Word on Windows
If you, or your firm, manage your own Microsoft 365, the simplest way is the one for a whole firm, below, with Just me chosen. To install it on one computer by hand:
- Make a folder, for example
C:\Loupe, and copy the file you downloaded into it. - Right-click the folder, choose Properties, open Sharing, choose Share, add
yourself, and choose Share. Note the network path it shows, such as
\\YOUR-PC\Loupe. - In Word, choose File, Options, Trust Center, Trust Center Settings, then Trusted Add-in Catalogs.
- Enter the network path under Catalog Url, choose Add catalog, tick Show in Menu, and choose OK twice. Close Word and open it again.
- Choose Home, then Add-ins, then Advanced. Open Shared Folder, select Loupe, and choose Add.
Microsoft describes this route as meant for testing, and it works on Windows only. To remove it, delete the file from the folder and remove the catalog in the same Trust Center page.
For everyone at a firm
A Microsoft 365 administrator installs Loupe for every user, or for chosen ones, in Word on Windows, on a Mac and in the browser at once. Nobody else does anything.
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Choose Show all, then Settings, then Integrated apps, then the Add-ins link near the top, then Deploy Add-in and Next.
- Choose to upload a custom add-in, choose the option to give a URL for the manifest, enter
https://loupe.legal/manifest.xml, and choose Upload. - Choose Everyone, Specific users/groups or Just me, then Deploy.
Microsoft says an add-in deployed this way can take 24 to 72 hours to appear on the ribbon, and people may need to reopen Word. To remove it, remove it on the same Add-ins page.
What the add-in sends
When you press Check, the text of the document, or of your selection, goes to loupe.legal and is checked there. It is not kept. The add-in changes nothing in the document; it selects a citation when you click a finding. See Privacy for the whole of what we hold.
If a check does not run
- The daily allowance. Without an account, Loupe checks ten documents a day from one network. The pane says so when they are used; the count starts again at midnight UTC.
- A lookup that did not answer. Loupe says "not checked" rather than guessing. Check again later, or check that citation yourself.
- Nothing happens in Word. Close the pane and open it again. If it still does nothing, write to us with your Word version and what you see.
Your account and your data
Your account page lists the checks you kept, downloads what we hold and deletes the account. Questions about personal data go to privacy@loupe.legal.
