Check the brief you are answering.
Every reason to check your own citations is a reason to check the other side’s: their fabricated case is your motion, and their misquotation is your reply.
Written 5 November 2026. Loupe reports what the sources say; it is not legal advice.
Why
The brief on the other side was written under the same pressure as yours, possibly by the same kind of tool.
Courts have learned about fabricated citations mostly from opposing counsel, who opened the cases and could not find them. A citation that does not exist, a quotation the opinion does not contain, a pin cite to a page that says the opposite: each is an argument that writes itself, and each is a question of record, which a court can settle in a minute once it is pointed at the page.
How
- Paste their brief into the free check
No account is needed. The report lists every citation in it with what the published record holds at each: the case that begins at that page, its year and court, whether the pin cite falls inside the opinion, the statute in the current code, the link.
- Open what the report flags
A defect in the report is a finding about the record, with the source named. Read the page before you write a sentence about it; the sentence you write will be yours.
- Say what the record says
“The opinion beginning at 912 F.3d 1104 is Doe v. Roe, not the case cited” is a statement a court can verify in its own copy of the reporter. Keep to that register: the record, the page, the words.
What not to do
Do not accuse on “not verified”.
Not verified means Loupe could not settle the question from the sources it reached: an opinion whose text it does not hold, a state code it does not read, a page range it lacks. It is not a finding that the citation is wrong, and a motion built on it would be wrong about the record in exactly the way the motion complains of. Read the open ones; argue the settled ones. The same applies to your own brief, which is the other reason to run it.
Check a filing
Paste the brief or drop the file, and Loupe looks up every citation in the published record. It doesn’t generate anything, and what it can’t settle it marks “not verified”, never clean.
